Introduction
Sanitary waste management remains a pressing environmental challenge, particularly in urban areas. An innovative system developed by Pad Care Labs addresses this issue by efficiently converting used sanitary pads into reusable materials, significantly reducing carbon emissions. This breakthrough has not only improved sanitary pad disposal but also earned substantial funding and recognition, marking an important milestone in sustainable waste management solutions.
Origins of the Sustainable Sanitary Pad Disposal Concept
In 2018, Ajinkya Dhariya, a mechanical engineering student from Pune, gained the opportunity to present his business idea at a contest organized by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). His concept — a sustainable method for managing and disposing of sanitary waste — received recognition as one of the top ten entries.
Motivated by this response, Ajinkya founded Pad Care Labs in Pune, launching an eco-friendly system that transforms used sanitary pads into cellulose and plastic pellets. This innovation attracted Rs 30 lakh in funding from the Infosys Foundation’s Aarohan Social Innovation Awards, enabling product commercialization.
“The funding helped me bring my idea to life. We set up 10 conversion units across Pune,” Ajinkya remarked, highlighting the transformative impact of the Aarohan awards on the project’s acceleration.
Currently, the system manages disposal of 1.5 metric tonnes of sanitary pads daily, cutting carbon emissions by approximately 200,000 kilograms every day.
Safe Disposal of Sanitary Pads: Challenges and Insights
Prior to founding Pad Care Labs, Ajinkya was deeply invested in developing sustainable waste management solutions. His research revealed significant issues with conventional disposal methods, such as landfill dumping and burning, which pose environmental hazards.
Further investigation involved engaging with students from Pune schools and colleges regarding their pad disposal practices. Findings indicated widespread inconvenience and hygiene concerns:
- Users felt embarrassed carrying used pads outside toilet cubicles due to the absence of bins inside.
- Many flushed pads down toilets, leading to blockages.
- Pads were often discarded unwrapped in bins, resulting in unpleasant odors and unsanitary conditions for cleaning staff.
These observations underscored the need for a hygienic, convenient disposal system to prevent pad accumulation and environmental harm.
Developing the Innovative Pad Disposal Solution
Working alongside a team of six, Ajinkya developed prototypes named ‘SaniBin’ and ‘SanEco’. These employ combined chemical and mechanical processes to safely break down sanitary pads.
SaniBin units are installed inside toilet cubicles to collect used pads. Each liner, which accommodates up to 30 pads over three weeks, features a patent-pending disinfection system that inhibits bacterial growth and neutralizes odors.
Filled liners are transported to the SanEco machine, where pads are mechanically shredded. Subsequent treatment processes disinfect the material, remove colorants and deodorants from super-absorbent polymers, and break down the pads into cellulose and plastic pellets.
The extracted cellulose is repurposed in paper manufacturing, while the plastic pellets serve as raw materials for packaging products.
This pioneering approach was recognized with an honor at the 2018 Aarohan Social Innovations Awards by Infosys.
Impact of Awards and Scaling the Business
The Aarohan awards platform proved instrumental in refining the project. The rigorous application process encouraged the team to critically analyze the significance of their solution and define clear objectives.
Networking opportunities with industry leaders, including Sudha Murthy, alongside insights from fellow innovators, helped shape the plan for scalable growth.
Following the award, Pad Care Labs successfully raised Rs 5 crore to expand operations.
Reflecting on his journey, Ajinkya stated, “In 2018, I was new to the startup ecosystem. The Aarohan awards and experience transformed my outlook. The support was not merely financial — it demonstrated that a major corporation like Infosys believed in our vision.”
Pad Care Labs also gained national attention through Shark Tank India Season 2, securing a Rs 1 crore investment offer for 4% equity from show investors.
