Innovative Solution Transforms Pregnancy Care for Rural Women
Access to regular pregnancy check-ups remains a significant challenge for many women living in rural India, where healthcare facilities are often distant and limited. Addressing this issue, a Tamil Nadu engineer has developed an affordable AI-enabled device that helps detect pregnancy risks early, potentially saving millions of lives by enabling timely medical intervention.
Why Pregnancy Monitoring Is Crucial
Medical experts recommend at least four antenatal check-ups during pregnancy to closely monitor the health of both mother and baby. Unfortunately, in rural areas of India, only about 54% of women manage to complete these essential visits. Without consistent monitoring, serious health problems can go unnoticed, increasing the likelihood of complications for mother and child.
The Inspiration Behind the Innovation
Senthil Kumar Murugesan, inspired by the difficulties his sister faced in accessing timely pregnancy care, recognized the need for improved healthcare support in rural communities. Leveraging his experience with companies like Samsung and Qualcomm, he embarked on creating a practical solution to bridge this gap.
Launching JioVio Healthcare
In 2019, Senthil founded JioVio Healthcare, a startup dedicated to maternal healthcare through the power of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The venture aims to bring pregnancy monitoring out of hospitals and directly into women’s homes via affordable and accessible devices.
AI-Driven Early Risk Detection
JioVio Healthcare developed an AI-based system that identifies high-risk pregnancies during the second trimester. Early identification allows healthcare providers to offer timely guidance on nutrition, medications, and lifestyle adjustments, preventing severe complications.
Introducing Allowear: The Wearable Device for Mothers
Senthil also designed Allowear, a wearable device specifically for high-risk mothers. This technology continuously monitors critical health indicators such as sleep quality, pulse rate, physical activity, and calorie consumption. Additionally, it delivers timely reminders for medication adherence.
Empowering Remote Healthcare Monitoring
Community health workers, known as ASHA workers, play a vital role by collecting data from Allowear devices via Bluetooth and uploading it to the cloud. This enables doctors to remotely monitor each mother’s health status and quickly respond to any warning signs, improving outcomes in areas with limited healthcare access.
Affordable Access Supported by Government
The comprehensive monitoring and support service is offered at the nominal cost of just Re 1 per day to users, a fee subsidized by the government. This affordability ensures that even women in remote villages can benefit from advanced pregnancy care.
Significant Impact Across Multiple States
Since its inception, JioVio Healthcare has supported over 3 million mothers across 14,328 villages in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Their sustained care program, spanning 1,000 days, has successfully monitored and assisted 7,320 high-risk pregnancies to date.
“By combining AI, wearable technology, and local health workers, this initiative is revolutionizing maternal health care and ensuring timely intervention before emergencies arise.”
Medical Observations and Benefits
Doctors using this technology report early detection of issues such as nutritional deficiencies, abnormal blood sugar levels, and high blood pressure. Early intervention through the system has led to a noticeable reduction in pregnancy-related complications, ultimately improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
Building a Safer Future for Mothers
Senthil’s mission transcends technology; it aims to provide accessible, life-saving care for pregnant women in underserved regions. This low-cost, innovative approach demonstrates how simple yet effective solutions can make a profound difference, turning risky pregnancies into safe deliveries.
