Engineer Brings Solar Power to Pune’s Underserved Communities

In Pune’s underserved bastis, many families have long struggled without access to reliable electricity, relying instead on expensive and hazardous kerosene lamps. During the Covid lockdown, engineer Javed Shaikh recognized this pressing issue firsthand and embarked on a mission to illuminate these homes with sustainable solar power.

Identifying the Need During Crisis

While distributing food and water during the Covid lockdown, Javed Shaikh observed that many widows and elderly residents lived in total darkness. Unable to afford electricity, their dependence on kerosene lamps posed health risks and financial burdens. This realization motivated him to take action.

Implementing Solar Solutions

Using his personal funds, Javed purchased solar panels and installation materials. With his engineering expertise, he personally installed solar lighting, fans, and phone charging facilities in homes that had lacked electricity for years.

“What started as a tribute to his father has grown into a mission to bring light into many lives.”

Although initially met with skepticism and doubt about his intentions, Javed’s consistent efforts gradually built trust within the community. His dedication has transformed the lives of over 20 families who now enjoy clean and reliable solar-powered electricity.

Enhancing Community Safety

Beyond electrification, Javed has contributed to road safety in Pune. Through the Yusuf Foundation, he has personally repaired more than 230 potholes, improving travel conditions and reducing hazards for local residents.

A Broader Movement of Change

Javed’s work exemplifies how individual initiative can spark meaningful community improvement. His story is featured as part of #ForceForGoodHeroes, a series highlighting India’s unsung heroes whose actions inspire transformative change.
