In a small village called Pamohi in Assam’s Kamrup district, a man named Uttam Teron decided to make a difference in the lives of children. What started as a simple observation during one of his trekking trips turned into a life-changing mission. Uttam saw children playing with water and mud instead of being in school, which prompted him to take action.

Setting Up Parijat Academy

With just four children, Rs 800 in his pocket, and a cowshed as a classroom, Uttam established the non-profit school ‘Parijat Academy’ in 2003. Named after the parijat flower, symbolizing the innocence of children, the school now educates nearly 400 children with the help of 22 trained teachers.

From Backbencher to Teacher

Uttam, a BSc graduate, never imagined himself becoming a teacher. However, his dedication to providing free education led to the transformation of his cowshed into a thriving educational institution. Children from 20 villages now benefit from Uttam’s initiative, with accommodation facilities available for those from remote areas.

Empowering Through Education and Skills

Aside from traditional subjects, Parijat Academy focuses on skill development to uplift underprivileged children. From computer training to handloom weaving, the students are equipped with tools for a brighter future. The school also encourages entrepreneurial spirit, with initiatives like making reusable cloth pads and raising awareness about menstruation.

Community Impact and Challenges

Uttam’s efforts have attracted volunteers and support from various individuals and organizations. Despite financial challenges, he remains committed to expanding the school’s facilities to accommodate more needy children. The journey has been tough, but Uttam’s determination to make a difference fuels his vision for a better tomorrow.

Uttam Teron’s story is a testament to the power of one person’s initiative in transforming a community through education and empowerment. His legacy lives on through the lives of the children whose futures are now brighter because of his selfless dedication.
