Retail Q1: Demand stays firm, margins slip
India’s organized retail sector began fiscal year 2027 on a positive note, with most publicly traded companies reporting solid double-digit revenue growth for the first quarter ending in June. However, while top-line figures indicate strength, there is a more complex scenario regarding profitability and margins, which vary according to companies’ business models, expansion approaches, and investment focus.
Earnings reports for the first quarter from key players such as Reliance Retail, Avenue Supermarts (DMart), V-Mart Retail, Vishal Mega Mart, Shoppers Stop, and Arvind Fashions reveal a consistent theme: consumer demand remains strong across value, premium, and fashion categories, but retailers are increasingly balancing growth initiatives with profitability goals.
This trend aligns with findings from the Retailers Association of India (RAI), whose business surveys indicated that demand stayed steady during April-June despite cautious spending by consumers influenced by the West Asia conflict.
Kumar Rajagopalan, executive director and CEO of RAI, noted that while consumers remain willing to spend, they are very price-conscious, prompting retailers to adopt focused value strategies in preparation for the upcoming festive season.
Revenue Growth Highlights
Revenue growth was robust across most retailers. V-Mart led with a 23% year-on-year increase in revenue to Rs 1,089 crore, supported by higher footfalls, 9% growth in same-store sales, and the opening of 15 new outlets. Vishal Mega Mart followed with an 18.7% revenue rise to Rs 3,727 crore, aided by 10% same-store sales growth and 24 net new stores.
Arvind Fashions recorded a 15.5% jump in revenue to Rs 1,279 crore, driven by its direct-to-consumer and online channels, which now make up 62% of its sales. Avenue Supermarts reported a 14.9% increase to Rs 18,795 crore, though its same-store sales growth slowed to 5.5% from 7.1% the prior year. Shoppers Stop achieved 11.2% revenue growth to Rs 1,291 crore, buoyed by demand in beauty and premium apparel. Reliance Retail, the largest retailer in India, posted net revenues of Rs 79,745 crore, supported by continued strength across multiple categories.
Profitability and Margin Trends
Differences are more pronounced when examining profitability. Value-focused retailers showed improved operating leverage, turning increased sales into higher profits. V-Mart’s net profit surged 40.5% to Rs 47.2 crore, and Vishal Mega Mart’s profit increased 25.6% to Rs 259 crore. Avenue Supermarts saw net profit grow 11.3% to Rs 861 crore while maintaining an EBITDA margin of 8%.
Shoppers Stop reduced its net loss to Rs 14.3 crore, aided by a focus on premium products, improved inventory management, and growth in its beauty segment.
Conversely, Reliance Retail and Arvind Fashions faced margin pressures due to investments for future growth. Reliance Retail’s net profit declined 14.1% year-over-year to Rs 2,805 crore. Its EBITDA decreased by 1.8%, and EBITDA margin contracted by 80 basis points to 7.4%. The company attributed this to expenditures on quick commerce, hyperlocal delivery, omnichannel initiatives, and digital infrastructure, highlighting a strategic trade-off of near-term profits to enhance position in fast-growing retail formats.
Arvind Fashions reported a mixed quarter, with net profit falling 23.8% to Rs 10 crore, mainly due to reduced other income, even as EBITDA rose 20% and margins improved by 50 basis points to 12.5%. Vice-chairman Kulin Lalbhai indicated plans for increased marketing investment, retail space expansion, and brand strengthening while managing raw material costs. The company anticipates further EBITDA margin improvement by 40-50 basis points in FY27 and targets about 15% revenue growth.
Analyst Insights and Outlook
According to analysts at Motilal Oswal, the quarter highlighted a widening gap within the organized retail sector: companies with established store networks and strict cost discipline are translating revenue growth into higher earnings, whereas those investing heavily in new growth avenues are experiencing shorter-term margin declines.
With the festive season approaching, investor attention will focus on whether retailers can maintain sales increases without sacrificing profitability.
