Brookfield Unveils Lumara, Eyes $600 Million Renewable Energy Push in India
Brookfield has introduced Lumara, a new renewable energy platform aimed at accelerating the development and construction of renewable projects across India. This initiative seeks to address common challenges in the market such as delays in power purchase agreements (PPAs), long grid connection queues, and prolonged land acquisition processes.
Strategies to Overcome Market Challenges
Lumara plans to fast-track projects that have already secured land and grid connection positions, allowing them to become operational even prior to finalizing a PPA. Furthermore, the platform will provide financial support to developers to hasten the progress of their project portfolios.
The program involves an investment of approximately $600 million, supported by an initial portfolio exceeding 6 gigawatts (GW) of capacity. This portfolio includes solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS), positioning Lumara as a comprehensive renewable energy solution.
India’s Renewable Energy Market and Lumara’s Role
Nawal Saini, Managing Partner and Head of Energy for South Asia and the Middle East at Brookfield, highlighted India as one of the most promising renewable energy markets globally. He pointed out the strong demand and the national target to achieve 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
Lumara aims to provide targeted solutions to inefficiencies by advancing projects earlier in their development stages. The platform is designed to deliver essential energy capacity more rapidly, addressing the decarbonization needs of commercial and industrial customers. This includes global corporations, hyperscalers, and government entities by offering flexible power options and reliable long-term renewable energy at scale.
Investment and Management Structure
Brookfield plans to fund Lumara through its Catalytic Transition Fund (CTF), a dedicated investment strategy focused on clean energy and transition assets in emerging markets.
Lumara benefits from Brookfield’s extensive experience as an owner, operator, and developer of one of the world’s largest clean energy portfolios. The company will establish a dedicated management team responsible for project execution, capital investment, and asset management.
Brookfield’s Presence in India
Currently, Brookfield’s energy portfolio includes approximately 45 GW of wind and solar assets across operational and development stages within India. To date, Brookfield has invested more than $32 billion in the Indian market spanning infrastructure, energy, real estate, and private equity sectors.
