Pohrupeth Residents Request Establishment of J&K Bank Branch to Resolve Banking Challenges
Kupwara, January 20: In north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the residents of Pohrupeth have appealed to relevant officials to open a J&K Bank branch in their area to address ongoing banking difficulties.
Community Dependence on Horticulture and Banking Challenges
Pohrupeth is a densely inhabited locality where most inhabitants rely on horticulture for their livelihood. The community stressed that traveling long distances for basic banking services consumes valuable time and resources, disrupting their daily activities.
Dr. Owais, a local resident, explained that many members of the community are engaged in horticulture, leaving little opportunity to visit distant banks for everyday financial tasks.
Repeated Appeals to Authorities and Bank Officials
Another resident, Abid Maqbool, noted that the concern has been raised multiple times with authorities. He stated, “We have submitted numerous requests to the district administration over the years. J&K Bank officials assured us that a survey to assess the feasibility of a branch in Pohrupeth would be conducted, but it has not yet taken place.”
Strategic Location and Wider Benefits
Locals emphasized that Pohrupeth serves as a central hub for the entire Pohru area, making it a logical and strategic location for a bank branch. They added that establishing a branch here would benefit not only Pohrupeth inhabitants but also residents of over 15 neighboring villages.
The residents expressed confidence that opening a J&K Bank branch would greatly simplify routine financial transactions and promote economic development throughout the region.
Current Banking Facilities and Limitations
While a Grameen Bank branch has operated in Pohrupeth for nearly 20 years, it does not adequately meet the community’s growing banking requirements. Notably, the existing branch lacks an ATM, which adds to the inconvenience experienced by residents.
Call to Action
The community has once again urged J&K Bank officials and district administrators to promptly take action to establish a fully operational bank branch and install an ATM at Pohrupeth. They emphasized that this would considerably alleviate the financial difficulties faced by the local population.
