Discover the inspiring story of two brothers who transformed a humble start in mushroom farming into a thriving Rs 25 lakh business in Uttarakhand. Their journey highlights the potential of sustainable agriculture in the region and the economic opportunities it creates for local communities.
Returning Home to Start a New Venture
In 2017, Sushant Uniyal, a media student from Delhi, made a bold choice. He left his private-sector job and went back to his hometown in Uttarakhand.
Sushant’s brother had an idea that changed their lives. He suggested they return to Uttarakhand and start their own business. The brothers began trying out mushroom farming.
Building the Largest Oyster Mushroom Unit in Garhwal
By 2019, they set up a large mushroom production facility. Today, it is the biggest oyster mushroom farm in the Garhwal region.
At first, they produced only 1–2 kilograms of mushrooms daily. Now, they harvest about 100 kilograms every day. Their business revenue, which started at just Rs 1,000 to 2,000, has grown to around Rs 24 to 25 lakh per year.
Creating Jobs and Opportunities for Locals
The success of their mushroom business goes beyond their own gains. Sushant says the venture has created opportunities for many people in the area.
Their journey began with just two people working on the farm. Over time, more people joined them. Currently, they directly employ seven to eight workers. Indirectly, their business supports 15 to 20 more jobs. In addition, over 100 people have visited to learn about mushroom farming from them.
The government has also noticed their work. The brothers have taken part in government projects promoting sustainable farming in Uttarakhand.
“Mushrooms are truly a blessing for people in Uttarakhand. The climate here is perfect for growing mushrooms naturally for eight to ten months each year. We do not need air conditioners or costly equipment to grow them.” — Sushant Uniyal
Why Mushrooms Suit Uttarakhand’s Climate
Sushant explains that oyster mushrooms, with their distinctive fan or spatula-like shape, thrive in Uttarakhand’s climate. This natural suitability makes mushroom farming a sustainable and profitable option for local farmers.
An Inspiring Journey from Student to Agripreneur
Sushant’s story demonstrates how a courageous decision combined with dedication can lead to success. Transitioning from a media student to an agricultural entrepreneur, he and his brother exemplify innovation and commitment to sustainable farming practices.
