Bringing Music Education to Mumbai’s Slums
When schools closed in Mumbai, Kamakshi and Vishala Khurana, two sisters, recognized a pressing need to keep education alive, especially for children in the city’s slum areas. These children, filled with talent, rhythm, and dreams, lacked access to musical instruments, formal music classes, and safe environments to nurture their skills.
The Sound Space on Wheels: A Mobile Classroom
To address this gap, the sisters transformed a bus into a mobile classroom known as The Sound Space on Wheels. This innovative vehicle brought music lessons directly to the doorsteps of these children, making education accessible despite geographical and socioeconomic barriers.
The program not only taught music but also diligently tracked attendance, ensuring that no child’s participation went unnoticed, thereby fostering confidence and joy in learning.
Impact and Reach
The initiative has successfully reached more than 12,000 children, demonstrating that talent exists everywhere, even when opportunities for growth are limited. The program’s holistic approach helped children build self-esteem and find happiness through music.
